The advantages of solar panels for private households come down to one figure: on Mallorca a 5 kWp system produces around 7,000 kWh a year and saves roughly 700 to 1,200 euros in electricity, depending on use. Add more independence from power prices, a higher property value and low maintenance. This post sets out the main advantages with current figures and sources. More on our photovoltaics page.

Which advantages of solar panels really count for a household?
The main advantage is a lower electricity bill. Using your own solar power replaces expensive grid power. The regulated price (PVPC) averaged about 0.19 euros per kilowatt-hour in September 2026, a market figure used as a basis. Every kilowatt-hour you use yourself saves exactly that amount.
Mallorca adds strong sunshine. According to the European Commission tool PVGIS, the island yields around 1,400 to 1,500 kilowatt-hours per kilowatt-peak per year. That is one of the best figures in Europe and makes the advantages of solar panels especially clear here.
The five main advantages at a glance:
- Lower electricity costs through self-consumption, especially at high tariffs.
- More independence from volatile power prices.
- Higher property value thanks to a better energy profile.
- Long module lifespan with little maintenance.
- Fewer emissions thanks to clean solar power.

How much does a household save with solar panels each year?
Savings depend on consumption and the self-consumption share. As a market figure, a household saves roughly 700 to 1,200 euros a year. Those who use a lot of power during the day, working from home or with a heat pump, get more. This range is an example, not a fixed value for your home.
The purchase is predictable too. As a market guide, a turnkey system costs about 1,000 euros per kilowatt-peak, so a 5 kWp system runs roughly 5,000 to 8,000 euros before grants. The IDAE, the Spanish energy agency, documents the long-term fall in prices. This works out to a payback of about six to ten years.
| Advantage | Figure (estimate/market) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Annual output 5 kWp on Mallorca | about 7,000 kWh | PVGIS |
| Electricity saving per year | about 700–1,200 € | market |
| Investment 5 kWp (before grants) | about 5,000–8,000 € | market |
| Payback | about 6–10 years | example |
Self-consumption and surplus: the advantages of solar panels all year
The biggest lever remains self-consumption. What you do not need at once, a battery can shift into the evening. What is neither used nor stored flows to the grid. In Spain, Royal Decree RD 244/2019 governs simplified surplus compensation, which credits exported power on the bill.
The combination with heating is especially effective. A reversible air conditioner heats with solar power in winter, as we show in our post on heating with air conditioning. This raises self-consumption, so the advantages of solar panels work all year.

Are there grants for solar panels on Mallorca?
Yes, though with deadlines. The Balearic programme FOTOPAR supports private systems up to 5 kWp and batteries up to 30 kWh. The 2026 round closed on 30 April 2026. The regional government has announced a new window for private applicants from 26 January to 30 April 2027.
The deadline is the key point: grants always run to a cut-off date. Preparing the system means you can use the next round instead of missing it. Many municipalities also offer a reduction of the property tax (IBI) for solar systems, which is worth checking locally.
Long lifespan and low maintenance
An often underrated advantage is durability. Modules usually carry a performance warranty over 25 years. They have no moving parts and work almost maintenance-free. On Mallorca, cleaning matters most, because Sahara dust and salty air can coat the surface.
An annual check keeps output high. We inspect modules, inverter and cabling and clean when needed. More on our maintenance page. That keeps the advantages of solar panels in place for many years.

What we see across our projects on Mallorca
According to our own access data, between August and September 2026 we recorded over 1,500 impressions for searches about installing solar systems and finding installers on Mallorca. Demand from private households is high and growing. Many owners compare first and then decide at their own pace.
A typical case, here as a worked example: a family with high daytime use covers much of its demand with a 5 kWp system and cuts the annual bill clearly. A second case is the second home that harvests plenty of sun in summer and exports the surplus. Both show the advantages of solar panels in practice.
Frequently asked questions about the advantages of solar panels
Are solar panels worth it for a private household on Mallorca?
Yes. With strong sunshine and rising power prices, the savings are large. A 5 kWp system produces around 7,000 kWh a year. With good self-consumption, it pays back in about six to ten years.
How long do the modules last?
Solar modules usually carry a performance warranty over 25 years and often work longer. They are robust and almost maintenance-free. On Mallorca, cleaning dust and salt is the main task to keep output high.
What happens to surplus power?
Surplus flows to the grid and is credited on the bill under RD 244/2019, usually at a lower price. A battery can store it for the evening instead. The greatest benefit remains self-consumption at home.
Does the property value rise?
Usually yes. A house with solar panels and a good energy profile appeals more to buyers and tenants. For a sale or a rental this can be a real argument, on top of the ongoing savings.
