You can judge solar panel installers in Mallorca on seven checks, from their registration as an electrical contractor to after-sales service on the island. A rooftop system on a home usually needs only a prior notice to the town hall. The Balearic government lists 13 legalisation steps, and a reliable installer handles them for you. What does a solar panel installer in Mallorca actually do?
A solar panel installer designs, fits and legalises your photovoltaic system. On site, they check roof area, orientation, shading and your electricity use. They then size the system in kilowatt-peak (kWp) and choose panels, inverter and, if you wish, a battery.
On the island, the paperwork is part of the job. The system is notified to the town hall and registered with the Directorate-General for Energy. It is then entered in the Balearic self-consumption register. Only after that can the grid operator credit your surplus.

How do you spot a reliable installer?
A reliable installer is registered as an electrical contractor, visits your home and gives you a complete written quote. The table shows what to ask for and which warning signs to watch.

| Check | What to ask for | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | Low-voltage electrical contractor declaration (REBT, ITC-BT-03) with liability insurance | No details about registration |
| Site visit | A visit before the quote is prepared | A flat price based on a photo or a call |
| Quote | Capacity in kWp, panel and inverter models, fitting, grid connection and paperwork itemised | One total price with no breakdown |
| Legalisation | Town hall notice and filing with the Directorate-General included | You are asked to file the documents yourself |
| Materials | Panel datasheets showing the IEC 61701 salt mist test for coastal homes | No datasheets |
| Service | Written warranties, a maintenance plan and a contact on the island | No contact after installation |
| Comparison | At least three quotes | Pressure to sign on the spot |
Choose an installer who can document all seven points in writing. The Energy Saving Trust advises getting quotes from at least three installers. It also recommends asking for written maintenance checks and troubleshooting guidance before you commit.
Which permit does a solar system in Mallorca need?
A rooftop system on a building in an urban area needs only a prior notice to the town hall (comunicación previa). This is set by the Balearic planning law, Ley 12/2017. A full licence is required for listed or catalogued buildings. The same applies when the work affects the structure or needs an environmental assessment (CAIB).
On rural land (suelo rústico), self-consumption on legally built properties is a permitted use under article 48 of the Balearic climate law, Ley 10/2019. Systems without surplus, and systems up to 15 kW on serviced urban land, need no access and connection permit from the grid operator (CAIB).

This is how a project with Greentech Balear runs:
- Site visit, consumption analysis and sizing in kWp.
- Written, itemised quote.
- Prior notice to the town hall with a technical report.
- Fitting of panels, inverter and, if chosen, battery.
- Commissioning and filing with the Directorate-General for Energy and Climate Change.
- Entry in the self-consumption register and update of the grid contract.
The Balearic government sets no fixed timescales for these steps. The time taken depends mostly on the town hall and the grid operator.
Is there still a solar grant in Mallorca in 2026?
The Balearic FOTOPAR 2026 grant is closed. Applications ran from 26 January to 30 April 2026, for systems up to 5 kWp (CAIB). On 2 June 2026 the budget was increased (BOIB no. 69).
Only people domiciled in the Balearic Islands could apply. For owners of a second home, that condition matters. We explain the details in our article on the FOTOPAR 2026 grant. A good installer will tell you when a new call appears in the BOIB, the official gazette.
What we see on solar projects in Mallorca
Demand from German-speaking owners is clear. According to Greentech Balear’s Search Console data (June to September 2026), our website appeared 589 times for the German search “Solaranlagen Mallorca”, at an average position of 7.1.

On the island we design for two stresses: salty air on the coast and high roof temperatures in summer. One example is a Greentech Balear system in Valldemossa. The panels were planned to blend into the landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana.
Many owners spend only part of the year in Mallorca. For them, remote monitoring by app and a team that can attend a fault on site matter most. For seasonal care, read our guide to solar panel summer maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for solar panels on my roof?
Usually not. For rooftop systems in urban areas, Balearic planning law requires only a prior notice to the town hall. A licence is needed for listed or catalogued buildings, for work affecting the structure, or where an environmental assessment applies. Your installer should prepare the notice for you.
How many quotes should I get?
At least three, as the Energy Saving Trust advises. Compare more than the price. Check the capacity in kWp, the named components, whether legalisation is included and what maintenance is offered. A quote without a site visit is a weak basis for a system expected to run for 25 years.
How long do solar panels and inverters last?
According to the Energy Saving Trust, solar panels should last 25 years or more. The inverter typically needs replacing after around 12 years. Plan for that replacement from the start. Ask your installer about the warranty period for both components and the terms of any extension.
Can I monitor the system when I am not in Mallorca?
Yes. Modern inverters send production and fault data to an app. You can check from abroad whether the system is working. What counts is an installer on the island who will attend a fault. Agree before signing who responds when something goes wrong, and how.
Can I get a grant as the owner of a second home?
The FOTOPAR 2026 grant was open to people domiciled in the Balearic Islands. It closed on 30 April 2026. Whether a new call will follow, and on what terms, is not yet known. A local installer can follow the publications in the BOIB, the official gazette, on your behalf.
