Is solar power worth it in Mallorca? For most second homes the answer is yes, as soon as your self-consumption matches the system. A well-oriented array produces about 1,500 to 1,650 kWh per kWp a year on the island (PVGIS). You save most when you use the power yourself, at a price of €0.12 to €0.19 per kWh. We size our photovoltaic solutions for your home first. Typical payback runs from six to ten years.

How much power does a solar system produce in Mallorca?
A well-oriented array in Mallorca produces about 1,500 to 1,650 kWh per installed kWp each year. These figures come from PVGIS, the official calculator of the European Commission. Three things decide the result: orientation, tilt and shading of the roof.
South-facing modules at around 30 degrees give the maximum. An east-west roof spreads the yield across the day and often suits consumption better. Mallorca has around 2,750 hours of sun a year, far more than central Europe.
For the return, raw yield is not what counts. What counts is the share you use yourself. More on this in our article on self-consumption in Mallorca.

When does the system pay for itself?
The system usually pays for itself in six to ten years, depending on self-consumption and the electricity price. The regulated PVPC tariff averaged €0.12 to €0.19 per kWh without taxes in 2026 (source: Red Eléctrica/ESIOS). With grid charges and taxes, households pay clearly more per kilowatt-hour.
The example below shows the order of magnitude. The assumptions are stated: 1,550 kWh per kWp a year, an end price of €0.22 per kWh for self-used power and 60 percent self-consumption.
| System | Annual yield | Self-used (60%) | Yearly saving | Payback guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 kWp | 4,650 kWh | 2,790 kWh | about €614 | 8 to 10 years |
| 5 kWp | 7,750 kWh | 4,650 kWh | about €1,023 | 7 to 9 years |
| 8 kWp | 12,400 kWh | 7,440 kWh | about €1,637 | 6 to 8 years |
Choose a smaller system if you are on the island only part of the year. Choose a larger system with a battery if you live here all year or run a heat pump and air conditioning. Surplus energy is compensated under RD 244/2019, usually below the purchase price.

What grants and tax benefits are there?
For pure second homes, the state IRPF deductions usually do not apply. These deductions require a main or a rented home, according to the Agencia Tributaria. Owners who only use the home themselves cannot normally claim them.
Two local levers remain. Many councils in Mallorca reduce the IBI property tax or the ICIO building tax for self-consumption systems. The amount is set in each municipal ordinance and is time-limited. The regional FOTOPAR 2026 grant closed on 30 April 2026; a new call depends on the Govern.
Check the situation before buying. We tell you which deduction currently applies in your municipality.

How we work
We start with a site visit and a yield calculation using PVGIS. We then size the system to your consumption, not to the roof area alone. The process is clear and predictable.
First the visit and study, usually within one to two weeks. Then the quote with yield and payback. After your approval, the installation, often in one to two days. Finally the registration and legalisation with the council and the grid operator. We handle these steps for you.

What we see with systems in Mallorca
Demand from German-speaking owners stays high in autumn too. According to Greentech Balear’s Search Console data from 23 September to 20 October 2026, the queries “Photovoltaik Mallorca” and “Mallorca Photovoltaik” together reach around 80 impressions at an average position of 11 to 12.
In practice, consumption decides the return. Take one example: a home near Pollença with 6 kWp and a pool heat pump. Run the pool during the day and self-consumption rises sharply, so the system pays back faster.

Frequently asked questions
Is solar power worth it in Mallorca without a battery?
Often yes. Without a battery the cost falls, and daytime use covers a large share of the yield. Pool, air conditioning and hot water usually run while the sun shines. A battery pays off if you use a lot in the evening or live here all year. We check both options for your home.
How long does a system last in the island climate?
Modules usually last 25 to 30 years, inverters often 10 to 15 years. Salt and heat stress the material. Good mounting, ventilated inverters and a yearly service therefore matter. With care, the yield stays stable for many years.
Can I register a system as a foreign owner?
Yes. For registration you need an NIE and the property details. We handle the notice to the council and the grid operator. For systems up to 15 kW the procedure in Spain is simplified. The effort for you stays small.
What is surplus power worth?
The power you do not use is fed into the grid. Under RD 244/2019 your supplier compensates this surplus, usually below the purchase price. Self-consumption therefore counts for more than feed-in. The right system size beats an oversized one.
